University Search
The search for suitable colleges is the first step in this journey. Help your child identify institutions that offer the academic programs that interest him or her. Consider factors such as location, college size, campus culture and financial aid opportunities available. A diversified list of options will give your child the freedom to choose and increase the chances of acceptance.
SAT and ACT Test Preparation
Although some colleges are eliminating requirements for standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT, many still consider them an integral part of the application. Therefore, it is important to have a solid study plan and dedicate sufficient time to prepare for these tests. Consider enrolling your child in a test preparation course or hiring a private tutor.
As there are a variety of preparation resources available to help students get the best score possible, here we'll share with you our favorite SAT and ACT👇 resources.
Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities offer your child the opportunity to demonstrate his or her skills outside the classroom. Whether it's sports, music, art, volunteering or school clubs, colleges value students who have shown initiative and leadership in their interests. Make sure your child is participating in activities that they are passionate about and allow them to develop and demonstrate valuable skills.
Compilation of Documents
The college application process can be overwhelming due to the number of documents required. These include transcripts, tax returns and letters of recommendation. Keep all of these documents organized and handy to make the process easier.
Finance
Understanding the various forms of financial aid available can significantly ease the financial burden of a college education. Help your child fill out forms such as the FAFSA and CSS Profile to maximize financial aid opportunities. Also, research scholarships and grants for which your child may be eligible.
University Essays
College essays are an excellent opportunity for admissions officers to get to know your child beyond his or her grades and accomplishments. Help your child begin outlining and drafting their essays early. Remember, each essay should be a reflection of their personality, passions and ambitions.
Admission Interviews
Some colleges conduct interviews as part of the admissions process. Prepare your child for these interviews. Practice possible questions with them and make sure they feel comfortable talking about themselves, their experiences, and their academic and career goals.
Early Applications
If your child has a dream college, consider applying early. Early Action or Early Decision options may increase the chances of acceptance, but remember that some of these options may be binding and require a commitment from the student to attend college if accepted.
As you can see, the college preparation process is a journey that requires dedication, planning and a little patience. But you're not in this alone. At Best College Aid, we're here to help you every step of the way.
